Privacy Policy

iWonderWhat listens to conversations. That is a serious thing for an app to do, so it is built on one rule: what it hears stays on your iPhone. This policy is short because there is genuinely nothing going on behind your back.

Information we collect

None. iWonderWhat has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind. We never see your conversations, your questions, or anything else. We do not know who you are or that you have installed the app.

The app makes no network connections to us, because the app contains no networking code at all.

Audio

The microphone is the most sensitive thing the app touches, and it is treated that way:

• Audio is never written to disk. Sound goes from the microphone straight into the speech recogniser and is discarded. There is no recording, no audio file, and nothing to recover — not by us, not by you, not by anyone with your unlocked phone.
• Audio is never transmitted. It does not leave the device in any form.
• The microphone is only live during a session you started, from the app, or from a shortcut you invoked yourself. It never starts on launch, on a schedule, on your location, or on anything else.
• A Live Activity is shown for the whole of every session, and iOS shows its own microphone indicator. Sessions also stop themselves after a time limit you set, so a forgotten one can't run all day.

Transcription

Speech is turned into text by Apple's on-device speech model, running on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to Apple, to us, or to any third party to be transcribed. If an on-device model is not available for your language, the app tells you and refuses to start a session — it will not quietly fall back to a server.

The rolling transcript is held in memory only, covers roughly the last two minutes, and is wiped when the session ends. It is never written to storage.

What is actually saved

Only the questions the app caught, and a short snippet of the conversation around each one so you can tell what it was about. These are stored in a local database on your device, together with your settings. They never leave it, they are not backed up to any server of ours, and deleting the app deletes them.

When you look something up

Tapping Ask Google — or Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Wikipedia — opens that service in your browser with the question as a search. At that point you are using that company's service, and their privacy policy applies to what you do there. iWonderWhat sends nothing else: no identifier, no history, no profile. It only ever happens because you tapped it, or because you spoke the search command you switched on yourself.

Notifications

If you enable the optional spoken search command, the app may post a local notification — one that your iPhone creates itself. This happens because iOS does not allow a backgrounded app to open a web browser, so the search is handed to you as something to tap instead. There is no push notification service, no server, and no device token. If you never turn the feature on, the app never asks for notification permission at all.

Other people in the room

iWonderWhat will hear people who did not install it. Nothing they say is recorded or transmitted, and nothing is kept beyond a question you deliberately captured. Even so: recording or transcribing people without telling them is unlawful in some places and impolite in all of them. Please tell the people you are with. The app is designed so that this is easy — the indicator is always visible and there is nothing hidden to explain away.

Children

iWonderWhat is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.

Your rights

Data protection law gives you rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. We hold none, so there is nothing for us to hand over or erase. Everything the app holds is on your device and under your control: delete individual questions in the app, or delete the app to remove all of it.

Changes to this policy

If this ever changes, the updated policy will be posted here with a new date. If a future version of the app were ever to collect anything, that would be spelled out plainly and asked for first — it would not be slipped into a policy update.
